What are things I need to do to prepare prior to a pool install?
Preparing for a pool installation can be exciting! Here’s a breakdown of key things to do beforehand:
1. Plan & Design:
- Choose Your Pool Type: Inground (vinyl, fiberglass, concrete), above-ground, or a hybrid? Each has pros and cons.
- Size & Shape: Consider your yard size, how you’ll use the pool (laps, lounging, etc.), and desired aesthetics.
- Features: Think about extras like slides, waterfalls, spas, and heating options.
2. Location & Logistics:
- Yard Assessment: Clear the area of debris, mark the desired location, and consider sun exposure, drainage, and proximity to utilities.
- Setbacks & Permits: Check local zoning regulations for setbacks from property lines and obtain necessary permits.
- Access: Ensure the installation crew has easy access to the site with heavy equipment.
3. Budget & Timeline:
- Get Quotes: Obtain quotes from multiple reputable pool builders to compare costs and services.
- Financing Options: Explore financing options if needed (loans, credit cards).
- Timeline: Discuss the expected timeline for the project with your chosen builder.
4. Other Considerations:
- Landscaping: Plan any surrounding landscaping (patios, decks, fencing) to complement the pool.
- Safety: Discuss safety features with your builder (fencing, alarms, covers).
- Maintenance: Research pool maintenance requirements (chemicals, cleaning, etc.).
Tips:
- Start Early: Pool installations can take time, so begin planning well in advance, especially during peak seasons.
- Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask your pool builder any questions you have throughout the process.
- Read Reviews: Research and choose a reputable and experienced pool builder with positive customer reviews.
-
Are there hidden costs I should know about?
Here are some potential unexpected expenses that can arise during a pool installation:
- Unexpected Ground Conditions:
- Rock: Hitting rock during excavation can significantly increase costs as it requires specialized equipment and labor to remove.
- Soil Issues: Unstable soil or high water tables may require extra engineering and support structures, adding to the expense.
- Utility Relocations: If existing utilities (water, gas, electric, sewer) are located within the pool area, they must be relocated, which can be costly.
- Permitting Delays: Unexpected delays in obtaining permits can disrupt the project timeline and potentially incur additional costs.
- Changes to the Plan: If you decide to make changes to the original design or add features during construction, it will likely increase the overall cost.
- Landscaping/Grading: The cost of preparing the surrounding area (grading, landscaping, drainage) can sometimes be underestimated.
- Ongoing Maintenance Costs: Don’t forget about the ongoing costs of pool ownership, such as:
- Chemicals: Chlorine, algaecides, etc.
- Water Costs: Filling and refilling the pool.
- Energy Costs: Running the pump, filter, and heater.
- Maintenance Supplies: Filters, cleaning equipment.
- Professional Maintenance (optional): Hiring a pool service for regular cleaning and maintenance.
Tips to Minimize Hidden Costs:
- Thorough Site Investigation: Have a professional assess the site for potential issues like rock or soil problems.
- Detailed Contract: Ensure the contract with your pool builder is detailed and includes specific clauses regarding unexpected costs.
- Contingency Fund: Set aside a contingency fund to cover unforeseen expenses.
- Communicate Clearly: Maintain open communication with your builder throughout the project to address any potential issues early on.
By being aware of these potential hidden costs, you can better prepare for the overall expense of your pool installation.
- Unexpected Ground Conditions:
